LehCats, which is co-led by reed player Norbert Stachel and flutist-singer Karen Stachel, can be thought of as their version of World Jazz as reflected by the mixture of musical cultures that they experience in the San Francisco Bay area. The Stachels, who are joined by a variety of rhythm section players who bring in rhythms from across the globe, perform original melodies that reflect the influences of many cultures, particularly from Latin and South America with a taste of the Mideast (“Meshugaza”) and Africa.

Movement To Egalitaria salutes a fictional land where human rights reign supreme; sort of like the idealized (if somewhat lost) dream of the United States. Norbert Stachel is featured on flute, tenor (taking a fiery solo on “Step On It”), alto, soprano and bass clarinet while Karen Stachel is heard on flutes, piccolo and an occasional vocal. Among the other soloists who make strong impressions are pianists Axel Laugart and Edsel Gomez, guitarists Mike Stern (who is blazing on “Doppler Effect”) and Bob Lanzetti, and bassist Peter Washington. The large supporting cast includes such notables as drummer Lenny White, bassist Lennie Plaxico, guitarists Ray Obiedo and Will Bernard, and percussionist Pete Escovedo.

The music, even with its variety of rhythms, is primarily straight ahead (although with a few funkier selections), melodic and swinging. The fresh melodies, happy and optimistic vibes, and high musicianship make Movement To Egalitaria a musical journey well worth taking.
Liner Notes by Kabir Sehgal

Movement to Egalitaria is a forward-looking opus which will provoke and enchant you at the same time. These eleven tracks are composed, arranged, and performed with many tones and hues, ultimately rendering a beautiful landscape, a soundtrack of what the world could be. LehCats (Karen Stachel and Norbert Stachel) have delivered a fiercely intelligent and groundbreaking production that isn’t just a musical contribution but a cultural one, in which listeners can meditate on the state of their souls. This album is indeed “aural literature” which you can revisit time after time, and you’ll hear something differently, as the rhythm and unfolding chords envelop you, from neck and shoulders, to ankle and toe. This album will move you.
LehCatstag:lehcats.com,2005:Post/52216582018-05-07T19:24:55-04:002018-10-13T18:49:53-04:00Here It Is!

Our next release will be available this Spring 2018. Check this out:

Movement to Egalitaria is a line in the sand. Any jazz fusion recordings that are released in the future will be compared to this album. Karen Stachel and Norbert Stachel have delivered an epic and energetic production for the ages. They have poured their hearts and souls into creating something that will stand the test of time – not just because of its brilliant virtuosity – but because this album has vision and integrity. It stands for something.

During its 175th anniversary season (2016–17), the New York Philharmonic chose to celebrate New York City and its role as home to the Orchestra and as an adopted home for many. The New World Initiative (NWI) evolved from a major event in the Philharmonic’s history: the 1893 World Premiere of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World — the first major work composed in New York that became immediately and enduringly popular. The complete work represents a yearning for new beginnings while also looking back to where we came from. Through the NWI, the Philharmonic has engaged with New Yorkers citywide by making the New World Symphony a cultural touchstone for as many New Yorkers as possible.

We aimed to have as many interpretations of the work reach as many ears as possible and to foster connections in our vast music community by collectively taking ownership of this very New York work. To achieve this, the NWI has created countless opportunities for all New Yorkers to hear and creatively engage with Dvořák’s New World Symphony, understand its significance, and appreciate its role within New York City’s cultural history. The NWI was designed to focus not only on past accomplishments, but to step outside orchestral routine and make a special contribution that will bring recognition to New York’s vibrant music community.

“I can think of no better way for the New York Philharmonic to help mark this milestone than through The New World Initiative, which celebrates our connection to this iconic work and its central idea of home. In addition to season-spanning performances of a symphony that has long held a special place for audiences around the world and in this Orchestra’s heart, we are proud to work with collaborators across our hometown to engage with our community in an exploration of the idea of home through our performances, education programs, and archival resources.” — New York Philharmonic President Matthew VanBesien

Derrick Hughes, Vocals

We played at Yoshi's in Oakland the first night. Nice size crowd. Many friends and family. The next night we played at the Fenix Lounge in San Rafael, CA. This time we had Derrick Hughes on vocals.

Friday night we played at Armando's in Martinez, CA. Such a great venue to hear and play music. Sunday we were at Cafe Pink House in Sarasota. Our last gig was at Cafe Stritch in San Jose. There we had Deszon Claiborne on drums. We had a blast and we are already planning our next tour to the Bay Area in October! Hope to see you then.

What a beautiful venue! The place is perfect to hear your favorite artists; nice stage, nice sound system, nice sound man, Tony Falco. The setting is idyllic upstate New York with a deck overlooking a soothing waterfall. The food is prepared with love and the staff and management were so helpful and considerate. Can't wait to play there again!
LehCatstag:lehcats.com,2005:Post/43628272016-09-09T17:21:56-04:002018-10-13T18:53:50-04:00LehCats - Out Of The Bag
September 9, 2016
